7 signs of a nervous breakdown

“I have a nervous breakdown!” – we say or think when we are overloaded and, it seems, we can’t stand it anymore. But what is it? And what to do if there is no strength at all? Explains the psychotherapist Erin Engl.

There is no such diagnosis

Sources of stress can be different: a breakdown of relations with a partner, financial problems, personal grief, mental exhaustion. Each organism and psyche react to stress in their own way. Several basic symptoms can be listed.

1. Anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depressive symptoms – a normal reaction to stress factors. Problems begin with prolonged continuous exposure to stress, when a person ceases to grab resources in order to cope with him. This can manifest itself, for example, in the attacks of uncontrolled crying. Being on the verge of breakdown, many lose confidence and faith in themselves, suffer from guilt.

2. Excess or lack of sleep

Another reason for concern is a change in the usual sleep regime. For some, sleep becomes a flight of stress, they sleep longer than the usual. Others, due to constant intense functioning of the brain, begins insomnia.

3. Fatigue

The feeling of weakness in the body is another sign that the body is no longer able to cope with stress. What was previously given easily, now requires a large tension of forces. What was happy before, no longer brings pleasure. This also applies to sex – stress often negatively affects libido.

4. Violation or strengthening of appetite

In stressful situations, some lose their appetite, others, on the contrary, begin to “seize” stress. Stress hormone cortisol can cause increased interest in fatty and sweet foods.

In addition, in a state of nervous breakdown, it is difficult to force yourself to think about a diet and healthy diet, it is more difficult for us than usual, to take care of ourselves and our health.

5. Physical pain

Most often we are talking about headaches or abdominal pain. In particular, stress often leads to digestive disorders.

6. “Fog in the head”

Problems with thinking are manifested in different ways: we cope with life and working tasks worse, become indecisive, confused, forgetful.

7. Difficulties with breathing

Pay special attention to the appearance of classic symptoms of anxiety: compression in the chest and rapid breathing. Frequent shallow breathing only exacerbates the stressful reaction of the body. Try to deliberately breathe slower (about five breaths-louds per minute) within a few minutes-this should bring relief. If breathing problems last for a long time, it is important to understand the source of the problem that causes stress.

The priority should be the care of itself. Find healthy ways to deal with stress that are suitable for you personally. It can be sports, your favorite hobby. Discuss the situation with friends or relatives that you completely trust. In more severe cases, without hesitation, seek help from a psychologist or psychotherapist.
